Good Summer Reads

Inspire kids to explore faraway places in the pages of a book.

The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is underway! Each summer, we encourage kids to log as many minutes as they can to keep them reading all summer long. Our free online program inspires young minds to explore the possibilities that lie between the pages of a great book.

During the summer months especially, kids can choose books that intrigue them. Whether they go for humor, drama, or mystery, reading books they love will serve them well. As literacy experts Jeffrey Wilhelm and Michael Smith report from their study of adolescent readers, "pleasure is not incidental to reading—it's essential."

Author Jude Watson proves the point in this brief video, recalling the moment her best friend handed her A Wrinkle in Time. "It blew me away," Watson says of Madeleine L'Engle's classic.

Our Summer Reading site has book lists by age group (here is the YA list), popular titles in Spanish, captivating stories like "The One and Only Slayer & Sleuth," by Patrik Henry Bass, and more. Kids who are feeling creative can contribute their own stories in our online writing contest.

So far, 131,341,336 reading minutes have been logged. Check back throughout the summer to watch the number rise. Participants have until September 4 to set a new reading world record!
